How can I ensure my account security is safe from fraudulent access?

Other than the security measures Mamo has in place to protect your account, it is important that you remain vigilant and take personal care to lower the risk of exposure to fraud. After all, the majority of fraud takes advantage of human error.

The most common attacks you may face

  • Phishing: This is a type of cyberattack where the fraudster sends an email or text message that appears to be from a legitimate source, such as your bank or credit card company. The email or text message will often contain a link that, when clicked, will take you to a fake website that looks like the real website. Once you enter your personal information on the fake website, the fraudster can steal it and use it to commit fraud.

  • Malware: This is software that is designed to harm your computer or device. Malware can be installed on your device through a variety of ways, such as clicking on a malicious link, opening an infected attachment, or downloading a file from an untrusted source. Once malware is installed on your device, it can steal your personal information, track your online activity, or even take control of your device.

  • Social engineering: This is a type of fraud where the fraudster tricks you into giving them your personal information or clicking on a malicious link. Social engineers are often very good at manipulating people, and they may use a variety of techniques to get you to trust them, such as pretending to be from a legitimate company or posing as a friend or family member.

  • Synthetic identity theft: This is a type of identity theft where the fraudster creates a new identity using real and fake personal information. This new identity can then be used to open accounts, apply for loans, or even rent apartments.

  • Man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks: These attacks occur when a cybercriminal intercepts communications between two parties, such as a customer and their bank. The cybercriminal can then modify the communications, such as changing the amount of money in a transaction. These typically happen on public WiFi, such as at airports or coffee shops.

How to protect yourself

It is important to be aware of these risks and to take steps to protect yourself. Some tips for protecting yourself from fraud or hacking include:

  • Be careful about what information you share online. Only share your personal information with trusted websites and companies. Mamo will never ask you for your PIN or password.

  • Keep your software up to date. Software updates often include security patches that can help protect your device from malware. Always ensure your mobile device and/or computer is up to date.

  • Use strong passwords and change them regularly. Do not use the same password for multiple accounts. Ensure that your password is strong (12 characters long, with a mix of lowercase, uppercase and special characters).

  • Be careful about clicking on links in emails or text messages. If you are not sure if the link is legitimate, do not click on it. Always verify that links being sent to you are taking you to our actual website. It is best to type out links yourself into your browser instead of clicking links included in emails.

  • Install a security software on your device. This can help protect your device from malware and other threats.

  • Always log out of your Mamo Business dashboard when you're finished. If you have a Gmail address, consider using Google Single Sign-on (Google SSO) to access your Mamo Business dashboard.

  • Always lock your device when you're away from your desk. Use a PIN, password, or fingerprint so unauthorized people can’t access it.

  • Create a strong Wi-Fi password only you know and use only secure networks when away from home. Always ensure you are using a secured WiFi network to access your Mamo Business account.
